About Jae
Jae Kwon (재권) is the stage name of Jae-hyun Kwon, a Korean-American alternative R&B artist born and raised in North Jersey and currently based in Los Angeles.
His music sits between cultures, built on smooth vocals, controlled tension, and late-night atmosphere.
Raised in a structured immigrant household, Jae grew up balancing expectation and instinct. Education and stability were assumed. Music was never the obvious path. At twelve, a middle school solo performance changed how he saw himself. By fourteen, he was writing. By sixteen, recording. By high school, he was performing in a local boy band while teaching himself guitar and studying harmony, breath, and control.
A major early influence came from an older cousin who filled his world with 90s and early 2000s R&B and the hip hop culture surrounding it. That foundation shaped his ear for tone and confidence long before he fully understood the lyrics.
He also boxes. Training began in his teens in North Jersey and continues in Los Angeles. The discipline shows up in his music the same way it shows up in the gym. Controlled breath. Measured tension. Knowing when to lean in and when to hold back.
Influenced by artists such as Frank Ocean, The Weeknd, DEAN, Crush, Miguel, and Bryson Tiller, Jae blends 90s smoothness with modern atmospheric R&B in a way that feels grounded rather than performative.
Operating independently under his imprint Blackbox Records, Jae maintains creative control over both sound and visual direction. Melody often comes first. Vocals are layered and refined until they sit exactly where they need to. He pays attention to space. He believes silence matters.
At its core, Jae Kwon is focused on presence. The music speaks for itself.
